Certified Recyclability: Physically crosslinked Alveobloc foam ready for PPWR compliance
Adligenswil, Switzerland, June 2026 – As Europe moves toward a circular, resource-efficient future, recyclability has become a decisive factor in packaging design. The new EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (EU) 2025/40 (PPWR) places strict requirements on all packaging materials.
Starting 12 August 2026, each material type will be assigned a recyclability class based on specific criteria— and must achieve at least 70% recyclability to remain compliant. For packaging producers, converters, and brands, this raises a critical question: Are the materials used today ready for the regulatory realities of tomorrow?
Alveobloc: Tested, certified and ready for PPWR
PE‑based packaging foams are widely used in transport protection, cushioning, and premium product inserts. To support customers in their transition toward PPWR compliance, Sekisui Alveo has evaluated its light‑coloured, physically crosslinked Alveobloc foam types for recyclability under the relevant European standards.
The certification on multiple Alveobloc variants as standalone components has been done by accredited Institut cyclos-HTP GmbH. The evaluation followed the methodologies of:
- Institut cyclos-HTP GmbH recycling assessment catalogue
- Minimum standard of the Central Agency Packaging Register (ZSVR)
- DIN EN ISO 13430 for packaging recoverability
100% Recyclability confirmed
The test results were clear and highly positive: The potential recyclability of the examined Alveobloc packaging material group reached 100%. This confirms that the tested light-coloured, physically crosslinked Alveobloc types — including blue, white, and natural — would enable to meet the PPWR minimum requirement of 70% recyclability by far with 100%.
‘This is a big step forward.’ says Fabian Leuthard, Application Development Manager, Adligenswil, Switzerland. ‘Physically crosslinked foams are proven to be recyclable.’
A strong signal for the packaging industry
For customers, converters, and packaging designers, these results offer immediate value:
- Full compliance readiness for upcoming PPWR regulations
- Material certainty in long-term packaging concepts
- Alignment with design-for-recycling guidelines
- Contribution to high-quality recycling streams due to the foam’s purity and material behaviour
By certifying the recyclability of Alveobloc, Sekisui Alveo strengthens its commitment to sustainable material solutions — helping customers advance their packaging portfolios and ensuring regulatory security well ahead of the 2026 implementation deadline.
